During the holiday break, the Blue Dragons wrestling team competed in the tough Floyd Farrand Invitational hosted by Sioux Falls Lincoln. This year's tournament involved 19 teams, 14 of which were Class A schools. Sturgis won the tournament with 200 points while the Blue Dragons finished in 7th place with 111 points. Due to some youth and inexperience in our lineup, we competed with only 8 wrestlers in the tournament. The coaching staff was pleased with our effort. This tournament is the unofficial end to our first 1/3 of the season. It was a nice way to start working towards our post-season goals. With the variety of teams, our wrestlers were able to see new competition which helped us see areas we need to improve upon during the month of January. Tanner Donelan and Scott Howe were able to claim championships in the tournament. Both young men wrestled smart, aggressive tournaments to put themselves in their places. Scott Howe deserves some recognition for his 150th career win in his semifinal match. He has been wrestling great lately, and we look forward to him continuing that effort. Brady Bonte also put himself in the finals by defeating a previously unbeaten Austin Lynde from Lennox in the semifinal match. He came up a bit short in the finals against the number 1 rated Class A Terrance Maier from Sturgis. Brady wrestled the best he has up to this point in the season. Cody Bonte also had a nice tournament. He finished in fourth place while have some nice wins along the way. As his confidence improves, I see him winning a lot more matches. Sean McPadden and Matt Bankes both finished in 7th place. I believe these two can use this tournament as a "springboard" for the remainder of their season. Each of them continue to improve and can be in the fight at the end of the year. Thomas Howe and Colby Pierret also competed with both of them being 1 match short of placing. Both wrestlers had some good moments in the tournament, but need to work on putting complete matches together. Some lapses during their matches really have hurt them.
