State B Wrestling Tournament - Blue Dragons place 3

Well Blue Dragons wrestling fans, our season has come to an end. I am very proud of the young men that competed all season for our team. They worked hard every day, many of them never getting an opportunity to wrestle a varsity match. They did so knowing the preparation was for their future, but also for the individual success of the team members that did compete in the post-season. It was another exciting state tournament with many exciting matches and plenty of heartbreakers as well. I am very pleased with the effort from the six individuals that wrestled this past weekend. We graduate Brady
Bonte as a four time state placewinner and Matt Bankes, who reached the tournament for the first time and made the most of it. These two young men will be missed as our program continues to improve and work towards being one of the best in the state. Canton won their first ever team title finishing with 123.5 points. Tri-Valley finished in second with 106.5 points. The remainder of the top 8 teams include in order: Webster Area (105 pts.), Wagner (103.5 pts.), Winner (102 pts.), Flandreau (88 pts.), Parkston (78.5 pts.), and Howard (73.5 pts.) The Blue Dragons finished in a tie for 14th with Clark/Willow Lake and Harding County with 44 points. Individual results are below:

113
Thomas Howe wrestled most of the season with a very difficult wrist injury. There was a point in the season that I really hoped Thomas could just place at the state tournament due to the injury. He was able to earn that state placing, but came up short of his personal goals. He was dealt a tough loss in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. I was pleased with how he rebounded to win in the next round to earn his placing. Many people feel the second-round wrestlebacks may be the toughest round of the tournament after having a tough loss. Thomas overcame his emotions to earn that victory and then battle his way to fifth place. I look forward to Thomas competing next year as a senior.
* won by fall over Alex Caba (Bon Homme) 1:50
* lost by decision to Oliver Aesoph (Faulkton) 9 - 5
* won by decision over Nick Dion (Wagner) 3 - 1
* won by fall over Nathan Jones (Britton) 4:06
* lost by decision to Kurt Braun (Burke/Gregory) 6 - 2
* won by decision over Jared Hueser (Elk Point-Jefferson) 4 - 2
     * 5th place finish in the Class B State Tournament

120
Tyler Willems wrestled well in his first state tournament. Unfortunately for Tyler, he fell victim to the future state runner-up in the first round. He then was leading, but was caught by a desperate opponent that pulled out a come-from-behind pin. Tyler made great strides in his wrestling skills this season, and he will be an important part of what our team does next season.
* lost by fall to Sean Bice (Winner) 3:24
* lost by fall to Grady Carley (Philip) 3:11

126
Colby Pierret wrestled a great tournament, but was stuck with some bad luck to come up short of placing. In the opening round, he fell short after nearly completing a tying takedown to put the match into overtime. He rebounded well the next two rounds, but happened to suffer a head injury in his final match after hitting his head on the officials knee. Colby really wrestled well over the last month of the season. I look forward to him improving in the off-season and having a highly succesful senior year next season.
* lost by decision to Lincoln Stoebner (Bon Homme) 5 - 3
* won by fall over Lukas Kallas (Ipswich/Leola) 0:47
* lost by decision to Casey Heninger (Stanley County) 4 - 3

160
Sean McPadden competed in his first state tournament and came up a bit short. He arguably wrestled in one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament. I was pleased with his effort, and he gained some valuable experience for his senior season. I hope the "taste in his mouth" makes him want to work extra hard in the off-season. Sean has improved every season and looks to finish his career next season with a better ending. He took a gamble late in the year to change weight classes. That gamble worked, but now Sean will want to come home with some hardware next year.
* lost by fall to Bryce Sichmeller (Webster) 3:46
* lost by major decision to Clayton Wahlstrom (Custer) 11 - 1

195
Brady Bonte wrestled a great tournament to close out his career. Unfortunately, Brady also had to experience one of the toughest things that wrestling can do to an individual. He made one mistake in his semifinal match to put himself into an early hole. He battled continuously throughout the rest of the match to put himself in a position to win. The heartbreak of wrestling reared its ugly head at this point. Brady appeared to secure the winning takedown only to have the official feel it was not earned. I still can't understand the logic on the no-call, but it definitely appears that Brady could have been in the finals with a takedown call. Brady had to return for two more matches after the loss. This is where I couldn't be more proud of him. He responded with two big wins to earn third place. Sometimes we can't explain why things happen in our sport. Brady kept his head high and went out with a great finish.
* won by fall over Logan Ammons (Philip) 1:22
* won by fall over Chad Sjurson (Webster) 4:20
* lost be decision to Ryne Baier (Harding County) 8 - 7
* won by major decision over Nathan Gruis (Tri-Valley) 13 - 0
* won by fall over Bryce Sayler (Marion/Freeman) 1:35
     * 3rd place finish in the Class B State Tournament

220
Matt Bankes made the most of his first state tournament by earning a placing. I am very pleased with the improvement Matt has made in his wrestling skills over his career. He put in the time and effort in practice to make himself better. I couldn't be more happy for him to end his career as a state placewinner. He fell behind early in the second round wrestleback match. If he wins that match, he places in the tournament. Instead of getting flustered, Matt stuck to his game plan and was able to earn the comeback victory by fall. His contribution to our program over the years will be missed next season.
* lost by major decision to Dyllan Knutson (Webster) 11 - 3
* won by fall over Gavin DeVries (Philip) 1:39
* won by fall over Jess Oliver (Lemmon/McIntosh) 2:21
* lost by fall to Parker Yost (Redfield/Doland) 0:38
* lost by major decision to Branden Tuttle (Winner) 11 - 3
     * 8th place finish at the Class B State Tournament

6 Wrestlers Advance to State B Wrestling Tournament!

The Blue Dragons wrestling team traveled to Tea for the Region 2B tournament. Nine wrestlers competed strong all day with six of them qualifying to Rapid City for the Class B tournament. These young men battled hard all day and showed a lot of heart. I believe they put their best effort of the season together and represented the Blue Dragons wrestling team, school, and community very well this past weekend. It will take another great effort at the state tournament to reach the final goals of the season. I believe we are peaking at the right time and will perform at a high mark next weekend. Tri-Valley finished in first place with 167 points. The top five rounded out as follows: Canton (138.5 pts.), Beresford (118 pts.), Flandreau (95 pts.), and Garretson (90 pts.). The State Wrestling Tournament begins on Friday with the opening round to start at 10:00 in the Rapid City Civic Center. Individual results are below.

106
Tait Johnson had his season come to an end, but not without some great effort. Tait had a great season for us considering the size disadvantage he faced almost every time out on the mat. He can hold his head high and continue to improve during the off-season. As he grows into the weight classes, I see quite a bit of success in the years coming.
* lost by fall to Justin Haneke (B) 1:00
* lost by major decision to Dylan Eldeen (TV) 12 - 0

113
Thomas Howe found the guy that was on vacation for the past couple of weeks. I was very impressed with how he was able to regain his mental focus for this tournament. With this great tournament, Thomas has set himself up nicely at the state tournament. It will be another tough battle as many of the competitors in his weight are closely matched. I really look forward to watching him compete at the highest level of his abilities this week. Thomas will wrestle Alex Caba of Bon Homme in the first round of the tournament.
* won by major decision over Jordan Sehr (C) 8-0
* won by decision over Jacob Thom (TV) 3-2
* won by decision over Jared Hueser (EPJ) 5-3
     * Region Champion

120
Tyler Willems wrestled a strong tournament to qualify for his first state tournament. Tyler has improved greatly throughout the season and now has the opportunity to earn his first state placing. I feel he is wrestling his best right now and can open some eyes at the tournament. He is building confidence and that can be dangerous to opponents right now. Tyler will wrestle Sean Bice of Winner in the opening round of the state tournament.
* won by fall over Derek Dilts (C) 2:14
* lost by fall to Ryan Schuman (TV) 1:32
* won by fall over Alex Norby (EPJ) 2:06
* lost by decision to Jared Sutton (F) 4-2
     * 4th place finish

126
Colby Pierret has continued his rise up through the competition. He wrestled smart this weekend to earn his first trip to the state tournament. He has the ability to really compete with any wrestler when he stays confident in his abilities and wrestles within himself. I look forward to him showing the rest of the state that he can win any match. Colby opens the tournament with Lincoln Stoebner of Bon Homme.
* won by major decision over Dorian Verhey (P) 11-0
* lost by fall to Josh Manning (B) 0:51
* won by decision over Kaleb Haas (H) 7-2
* won by decision over Dorian Verhey (P) 5-1
     * 3rd place finish

132
Brady Schleuter saw his season come to an end at the regional. He wrestled a very entertaining match to put himself one match shy of the state meet. I was very pleased with the progression of Brady's season. He continued to work hard every day in practice. As only an 8th grader, he his great potential for the rest of his career. He understands it is going to take hard work in the off-season and is committed to putting in the time. His efforts this year will pay dividends in career.
* lost by fall to Levi Merrick (AH) 2:43
* won by fall over Michael Cremer (MF) 4:20
* lost by fall to Nick Weis (EPJ) 2:08

160
Sean McPadden took care of business by getting some opening round revenge to earn himself a trip to his first state tournament. He knew the opening round was crucial to the rest of the day, and he took advantage of the situation. We made a late season move to 160 lbs with Sean, and he made the most of the opportunity. He will open the tournament against Bryce Sichmeller of Webster.
* won by fall over Aaron Staum (EPJ) 2:48
* lost by major decision to Caleb Heiberger (TV) 12-3
* won by fall over John Hoiten (MCM) 4:03
* lost by fall to Josh Casperson (B) 2:53
     * 4th place finish

170
Adrian Mendoza came one match shy of qualifying for the tournament. Adrian has been a great addition to our team. He has a great attitude and is willing to put in the time. I look forward to his senior year and watching him develop even more next season.
* lost by fall to Kase Jacobs (C) 0:34
* won by major decision over Justice Verhey (P) 11-0
* lost by decision to Dakota Petersen (F) 8-1

195
Brady Bonte continued to show he is on a mission. He has been very focused on his senior year and it looks as though he will not stop until he reaches his goal. Brady is a very agile wrestler for his size. That makes match up problems for his opponents. I look forward to him showing every other wrestler that he means business this weekend in Rapid City. He will wrestle Logan Ammons of Philip to start the tournament.
* won by fall over Andrew Teply (EPJ) 1:03
* won by decision over Adam Ivarsen (B) 5-1
* won by fall over Bryce Sayler (MF) 1:38
     * Region Champion

220
Matt Bankes wrestled an outstanding tournament to earn his first trip to the state meet. I am very proud of Matt for finally getting to "the show" as a senior. He has put in many hours in practice and now they pay off. It is very satisfying as a coach to see the effort be rewarded. Now, it is Matt's turn to put the effort into this weekend to reward himself. He has a great opportunity to earn a placing with a strong showing. I look forward to him being focused on one more goal of his this weekend. Matt opens the first round with Dylan Knutson of Webster.
* won by fall over Derek Wiebers (B) 2:37
* lost by fall to Tanner Ovre (C) 0:56
* won by fall over Robert Hoiten (MCM) 0:30

The Blue Dragons began their post-season in Flandreau for District 3B action. Nine of the ten wrestlers were able to advance to the Region Tournament to be held in Tea this Saturday beginning at 10:00. Tri-Valley won the tournament with 202 points followed by Flandreau (139 pts.), Howard (135 pts.), McCook Central/Montrose (103 pts.) and Garretson (99 pts.). Individual results are below.

106 lbs.
Tait Johnson wrestled well in the opening round of the tournament to put himself in position to wrestle next weekend. Tait has battled hard all year despite being drastically undersized. He has made some nice gains throughout the year and will need to wrestle well next week to continue his season.

* lost by fall to Luke Loudenberg (HOW) 0:55
* lost by major decision to Dylan Rice (FL) 11 - 2
     * 4th place finish

113 lbs.
Thomas Howe continues to battle through a difficult hand injury. We hope it can improve some over this week to give him a better ability to grasp with it. If he is able to gain some confidence in his hand, he could be very difficult to beat. He will need to be efficient scoring points when possible in case his hand becomes a bigger problem during a match.
* lost by decision to Jacob Thom (TV) 5 - 4
* won by major decision over Trent Lunders (MCM) 13 - 0
     * 3rd place finish

120 lbs.
Tyler Willems wrestled well and gave himself a great opportunity at the regional tournament. He was able to come from behind in the medal match to earn 3rd place. When he wrestles with confidence, he is capable of beating a lot of good wrestlers.

* won by fall over Cole Hodges (HOW) 2:55

* lost by fall to Cody Reed (FL) 1:30

* lost by fall to Austin Oyen (TV) 2:38
* lost by fall to Dalton Combs (MCM) 4:06
     4th place finish

Unfortunately, Tony Weiland saw his season come to an end. I feel Tony gained some great experience this season. With some off-season work in the weight room and on the mat, he could be a big contributor to our team next year.
* lost by fall to Jerry Kapperman (MCM) 2:59
* lost by fall to Tyler Genzlinger (HOW) 2:09

6 wrestlers place - Pierret and Bonte lead the way with Championships!

The Blue Dragons wrestling team finished its regular season with the Big East/LCC wrestling tournament. The injury bug continues to bite which left us with only 9 wrestlers entered in the tournament. Despite the injuries, our guys seem to be staying upbeat and focused on the post-season beginning this week. Our district tournament is in Flandreau on Saturday starting at 11:00. At the conference tournament, 5 individuals found their way to the finals. Our performance from the nine that wrestled was solid. We have a couple items to straighten out this week before the district, but overall seem to be about where we want to be heading into our tournament season. Colby Pierret had a very successful day winning his first ever varsity tournament. He seems to be gaining some confidence at the right time of the year. It will be fun to see him competing for a place in the state tournament if he keeps this going. Brady Bonte was our other champion. He enters the post-season in a dominant fashion with two pins Saturday. He will be right in a title chase and needs to stay focused one match at a time as he chases his goal. Thomas Howe returned to the mat after two weeks of rest with an injury. He didn't wrestle his style of match in the finals and will need to work on a couple minor items this week before the district. Thomas is one of the best kids in the state at his weight. While he is overcoming his injury, he needs to keep focused as well during his matches. He has a great opportunity coming in the next few weeks and we look forward to him working towards his goals. Tyler Willems finished in second place. He has been wrestling very consistent over the past month of the season. He has found the confidence necessary to battle in tight matches. Right now, he looks to be on the bubble to be a state qualifier. We believe he has what it takes to accomplish that feat and battle for a place in Rapid City. Adrian Mendoza wrestled well in earning third place. Adrian keeps matches interesting and is always a threat to put someone on their back. He will need that threat to keep his season going as he too is on the bubble for a state tournament berth. Matt Bankes rounded out our placing with a runner-up finish. He seems very determined to finish his senior season at the state tournament. He has been working hard and needs to wrestle smart as he works for his goals. He has the ability to get there, and we look forward to working with him to accomplish his goals over the final weeks of the season.

In the team race, Deuel finished in first with 142.5 points. Howard was second with 132 points followed by Flandreau in third with 123 points. The Blue Dragons finished in sixth place with 106 points. Individual results are below:

Blue Dragons place 4 at Wagner Invitational

The Blue Dragons wrestling team finished in 9th place with 65.5 points at the Wagner Invitational. Tri-Valley won the tournament with 194.5 points followed by Wagner (171 pts.), Parkston (145.5 pts.), and Elk Point-Jefferson (128.5 pts.). The team has been hit by the injury bug more this week which left us a bit short-handed. We were able to enter some unattached wrestlers allowing them some varsity level experience. Tyler Willems, Colby Pierret, Brady Bonte, and Matt Bankes led the way by placing in the top four. This tournament use to be the dual format, but changed to an individual tournament this year. There was some tremendous wrestling throughout the day. We are nearing the completion of our regular season. This coming weekend we travel to Clark for the Big East/LCC conference tournament. This will begin at 10:00. From there we begin our post-season at Flandreau with our district tournament. The wrestlers have appreciated your support and look forward to seeing you at our post-season tournaments.

In the tournament, Tyler Willems wrestled well in earning his placing. Tyler has been wrestling with confidence lately and it has shown in his matches. Continuing with this effort has promise for him in his drive for a state tournament berth. Colby Pierret wrestled his best tournament of the season. It is good to see Colby put this together at this time of year. He will need to continue this type of effort to accomplish his goals. Brady Bonte continued with his recent dominance with two falls while earning his championship. He has been very focused lately and looks to be on a path to reaching his goals. Matt Bankes showed great composure in his first round match. After falling behind early, he battled back to take the lead and then earn the fall. If he is able to keep his focus during matches, he has a great chance to end his senior season at the state tournament. I was really proud of our other wrestlers in this tournament. They were underdogs in many matches, but went out at wrestled hard each match. I know the results haven't been the best at the varsity level for some of these guys, but I believe our young kids are going to benefit from this season of adversity. They will rise up to the challenge as they mature in their careers.

Wrestlers split triangular at SF O'Gorman

The Blue Dragons wrestling team headed to Sioux Falls O'Gorman on January 19th to wrap up their dual season. We now will have two tournaments left in our regular season before beginning our post-season. On the night, we faced Dell Rapids in our first match. I felt we came out a bit lethargic in this match. We just didn't seem to have great intensity. We were missing a few starters with injury which didn't help the results. We did have some outstanding performances in this dual. John Houg gave up double-digit pounds while filling in for Thomas Howe. He earned a third period fall  to give us the early lead in the dual. Tyler Willems also wrestled more aggressive early in the match getting the fall in the first period. Adrian Mendoza and Brady Bonte earned the other two wins for us in this dual. Between duals, we talked about going into the O'Gorman match with a purpose. We can't be timid at this point in the season. We must work to score points at all times. If we are controlling the match and scoring points, our opponent is not going to be able to do the same. We also addressed the pride we have in not losing to both schools. It didn't matter if they were both Class A schools. We needed to answer the second dual with a win. The second dual started a bit slow with our younger wrestlers being a bit overpowered. That happens at times and they need to understand that every match is a battle. If that match doesn't go right, they have to wipe the slate clean and start over. We talk about have short-term memory loss in these situations. We want to improve from them, but don't want to dwell on them. Going into the 160 pound match, we were down 26 - 9. I asked those upper-weight wrestlers to "strap us on their backs." We were going to rely on them to help the rest of the team earn a win. I was very pleased with their response especially considering that three of them moved up a weight class to pull it off. We went on to win the next 5 weights all by pin. Our two seniors, Brady Bonte and Matt Bankes, gave us the final two victories that gave us the lead and sealed the win.

We finished our dual season with an 8 - 7 record. It would have been nice to win a few more of those duals; however, knowing our situation with young guys to the lineup and many injuries, we were still able to finish on the winning side. We travel to Wagner on January 28th, for what is now an individual tournament. Individual results are below.

Alcester/Hudson Quad Jan. 12th - Blue Dragons finish 2 - 1 on the night

The Blue Dragons headed to Alcester for their final quadrangular of the season. They battle hard against Lennox, Alcester/Hudson, and Beresford. It was a good night for the Blue Dragons as our older guys looked solid and our younger members stepped up and wrestled some great matches. We have been hit by the injury bug as of late and were hampered a bit by that. Most of the injuries seem to be minor at this time and we are hoping to every healthy soon for our end-of-season run.

In the Lennox dual, we had notable matches from Jacob Fitzgerald, Adrian Mendoza, and Tristen Wagner. Jacob gained some weight for us and filled in for some injuries and wrestled a smart match picking up the pin. Adrian fell short in the match, but wrestled as well as he has and just came up short against a tough opponent. Tristen showed some aggressiveness that we haven't seen before in getting his second period pin.

In the Alcester/Hudson dual, there were limited matches. Alcester/Hudson is low on numbers this season and is forced to forfeit many weights. We had notable performances from Tait Johnson and Colby Pierret. Tait stayed aggressive in earning a first period pin. Colby stayed aggressive and put the match away late with an 8 - 4 decision.

The Beresford dual saw us jump out to an early lead only to have Beresford take the lead back at 170 lbs. The teams traded leads late with Beresford coming out on top. With our shorthanded lineup, I was very pleased with the team's performance. Tony Weiland and Dylan Rouzer wrestled well for us. Tony moved up a weight class to earn a third period pin for the team. It was very pleasing for us to see Tony perform well against his old school. Dylan wrestled a rated wrestler up one weight class from where he normally is. Even though Dylan gave up some size, he wrestled well in the loss. He was very close to a pin at the end of the second period.
