This past Saturday we split our squad and sent the younger wrestlers to Volga for the Sioux Valley Invitational JV tournament. Our other wrestlers competed in the Huskies Invitational. Competing in Volga the boys were able to finish in 2nd place behind Sioux Falls Roosevelt. John Houg, Tait Johnson, Anthony Beck, Jacob Fitzgerald, Dylan Rouzer, Brady Schleuter, Sean Tillma, Blake Severson, Dylan Severson, Tyler Willems, Tristen Wagner, Matt Johnson, and Tony Weiland competed for the 2nd place honors. Individual results were not received yet. In Elk Point, Thomas Howe, Colby Pierret, Tanner Donelan, Cody Bonte, Sean McPadden, Scott Howe, and Matt Bankes represented the Blue Dragons. These wrestlers finished in 8th place with 103 points and Canton winning the tournament scoring 198.5 points. Both groups of wrestlers had fine days and look to be improving each time out. Our younger wrestlers were able to compete against opponents they were more prepared for and they took advantage of the opportunity. It will be enjoyable to watch these young men mature with their wrestling skills as this year continues. Our older wrestlers looked to be ready to turn the corner on the first 1/3 of our season. They eliminated many of the past mental mistakes and seemed ready to focus on our busy part of the season after Christmas break.
Individually:
Thomas Howe wrestled as well as he has all year. He was able to avenge losses to two opponents on Saturday to put himself into the finals of the tournament. When he wrestles fundamentally sound, he will win most of his matches. It was pleasing to see Thomas make the adjustments he needed to beat those two wrestlers.
* defeated Jacob Thom (TV) 4 - 2
* pinned Jered Hueser (EPJ) 4:25
* lost by fall to Jordan Bremer (WC) 0:46
2nd place finish
Colby Pierret showed signs that he can compete with the good kids. When he puts together a full match both physically and mentally, he can wrestle with most of the 112 lbers out there. Colby has been working to improve each week. I believe he is getting close to beating many of his opponents.
* lost by fall to Ryan Schuman (TV) 1:43
* pinned Cody Chester (WS) 2:43
* lost by decision to Sean Bice (WIN) 6 - 4
Tanner Donelan found his toughest tournament of the season so far. In the finals he ran into a state champion from Crofton, Nebraska. This turned into a back and forth battle after Tanner took charge early. From this match, he will be able to improve on a few particular areas that will help him in his drive for another state title.
* pinned Brandon Middlesworth (WIN) 1:11
* pinned Jared Limoges (EPJ) 1:04
* defeated Dominic Miller (CRO) 12 - 8
1st place finish
Cody Bonte found himself in a tough weight class this past weekend, and he wrestled smart to finish in 3rd place. Cody will need to be aggressive with his technique the remainder of the season. When he wrestles cautiously, his performance isn't his best. As a returning state placewinner, he needs to let his confidence help him through his matches. I look forward to watching Cody improve on that throughout the remainder of the year just as he did last season.
* defeated Dustin Cuka (BH) 6 - 0
* lost by fall to Riley Braun (EPJ) 1:45
* defeated Jordan Rozeboom (SBL) 6 - 1 OT
* defeated Derrick Lundberg (AH) 9 - 5
3rd place finish
Sean McPadden continues to improve each week. He works extremely hard out on the mat, but needs to work on finishing the moves he starts in all positions. I enjoy his drive to succeed and think that it will be just a matter of time before he starts winning the close matches. With this being his first year of varsity experience, I think he will be fine once he corrects some things.
* major decisioned Nick McGlaughlin (AW) 21 - 10
* lost by fall to Caleb Heiberger (TV) 3:20
* decisioned Casey Reihe (AH) 2 - 1
* lost by fall to Blase Vanecek (BH) 2:14
Scott Howe wrestled a very smart tournament. It is enjoyable to watch him put full matches together as he has been doing lately. As he continues to eliminate a few errors here and there, he will be able to put himself into the thick of things at the end of the season. His unique blend of length/leverage and strength are presenting problems to many of the people he is wrestling.
* pinned Ryan Donnelly (EPJ) 0:41
* major decisioned Sean Fitzgerald (SBL) 9 - 0
* pinned Tyce Meyer (WIN) 2:18
1st place finish
Matt Bankes started the day well, but ran into a extremely strong kid in the semifinal match. In his next match, he pulled a hip flexor muscle and then injury defaulted out of the tournament. Matt has been making nice improvements in his technique from week to week. I believe that if he continues to do so his effort will pay off for him. It has been nice to see his wrestling skills develop and mature this season.
* major decisioned Tyler Nguyen (SBL) 16 - 6
* lost by technical fall to Deryk Wortmann (CRO) 16 - 0
* lost by decision to Alonso Flores (WS) 7 - 2
* lost by injury default to Lukas Forsling (EPJ)
6th place finish
