9 Wrestlers Advance to Regional Tournament - Bonte claims District Title

The Blue Dragons began their post-season in Flandreau for District 3B action. Nine of the ten wrestlers were able to advance to the Region Tournament to be held in Tea this Saturday beginning at 10:00. Tri-Valley won the tournament with 202 points followed by Flandreau (139 pts.), Howard (135 pts.), McCook Central/Montrose (103 pts.) and Garretson (99 pts.). Individual results are below.

106 lbs.
Tait Johnson wrestled well in the opening round of the tournament to put himself in position to wrestle next weekend. Tait has battled hard all year despite being drastically undersized. He has made some nice gains throughout the year and will need to wrestle well next week to continue his season.
* won by decision over Carl Bruening (MCM) 7 - 3
* lost by fall to Luke Loudenberg (HOW) 0:55
* lost by major decision to Dylan Rice (FL) 11 - 2
     * 4th place finish

113 lbs.
Thomas Howe continues to battle through a difficult hand injury. We hope it can improve some over this week to give him a better ability to grasp with it. If he is able to gain some confidence in his hand, he could be very difficult to beat. He will need to be efficient scoring points when possible in case his hand becomes a bigger problem during a match.
* lost by decision to Jacob Thom (TV) 5 - 4
* won by major decision over Trent Lunders (MCM) 13 - 0
     * 3rd place finish

120 lbs.
Tyler Willems wrestled well and gave himself a great opportunity at the regional tournament. He was able to come from behind in the medal match to earn 3rd place. When he wrestles with confidence, he is capable of beating a lot of good wrestlers.
* won by fall over Caleb Krouse (MCM) 0:12
* lost by fall to Ryan Schuman (TV) 1:24
* won by fall over Cole Hodges (HOW) 2:55
     3rd place finish

126 lbs.
Colby Pierret also placed himself in a good position at regions. He has wrestled well over the past couple weeks and will need to continue to do so to qualify for the state tournament.
* won by decision over Kaleb Haas (HOW) 7 - 2
* lost by fall to Cody Reed (FL) 1:30
     * 2nd place finish

132 lbs.
Brady Schleuter battled hard to earn his way to regionals. He wrestled well in the semifinals against a defending state champion. He will be in a very deep weight at regions and needs to be at his best.
* lost by fall to Austin Oyen (TV) 2:38
* lost by fall to Dalton Combs (MCM) 4:06
     4th place finish

145 lbs.
Unfortunately, Tony Weiland saw his season come to an end. I feel Tony gained some great experience this season. With some off-season work in the weight room and on the mat, he could be a big contributor to our team next year.
* lost by fall to Jerry Kapperman (MCM) 2:59
* lost by fall to Tyler Genzlinger (HOW) 2:09

160 lbs.
Sean McPadden made a move up one weight class for the post-season. He wrestled well and has put himself into a great position at regions. I look forward to him wrestling well to keep his season alive next week.
* lost by fall to Kyle Scofield (FL) 3:46
* won by fall over Nick Davids (HOW) 0:44
* won by fall over John Hoiten (MCM) 2:19
     * 3rd place finish

170 lbs.
Adrian Mendoza also moved up a spot in the lineup. He wrestles with no fear and makes matches very exciting. If he continues wrestling as he has, he has a very good opportunity to stay alive in the season as well.
* won by fall over Brady Johnson (TV) 0:28
* lost by fall to Dominic Blindert (MCM) 4:51
* lost by fall to Dakota Petersen (FL) 4:03
     * 4th place finish

195 lbs.
Brady Bonte continue his winning ways. He wrestled a bit out of his style in the finals, but still came out with a commanding victory. He continues working to the goals he has set and will need to wrestle well this week as well.
* won by fall over Cain Rotert (MCM) 0:34
* won by major decision over Nathan Gruis (TV) 11 - 2
     * 1st place finish

220 lbs.
Matt Bankes wrestled well, but came up short in the finals. Matt sees an opportunity for himself at the regional and believes he can earn a trip to the state tournament. If he wrestles smart and stays aggressive, he could put himself into a great position next week.
* won by fall over Robert Hoiten (MCM) 1:23
* lost by fall to Thad Johnson (TV) 3:54
     * 2nd place finish
