District 3B

I find it hard to believe that we have already finished our district tournament.  The season has really gone by fast.  As I reflect on our season, I feel our team needs some credit right now for making quite a bit of sacrifice for themselves and the team.  We wrestled 11 of the 14 weight classes on Saturday.  One of the toughest things to do as a coach this time of year is having people not advance to the next week.  They have all worked hard to achieve their goals and having your season come up short is never easy.  I'm proud to say all 11 were able to advance to the Region tournament to be held in Salem.  Of our 11, many have some sort of injury right now.  I have never had a group of kids so banged up heading into our post-season.  We have some nagging injuries and some that are a bit more serious, but each guy is stepping up and doing their best.  They realize that there isn't time to rest or sit some time out.  They are putting forth their best effort and trying to not use the injuries as excuses.  Other than a couple of matches during the day, I believe we came out of our "funk" that troubled us the last couple weeks.  Looking at our region draws, every individual has put themselves in a spot to possibly advance to the State Tournament.  Some roads are tougher than others, but they all have a chance.  I believe that if we wrestle our best and can heal up some this week that we could advance as many as 8 or 9 guys to the state meet.  That would be a great day for us.
Team scores from Districts:
1. Flandreau 195 points
2. Howard 185.5
3 Garretson 170
4. McCook Central/Montrose 137
5. Tri-Valley 136
6. Chester Area 57

103 - Thomas Howe wrestled real well on Saturday.  His two losses were matches that he had some chances in.  Thomas needs to continue wrestling like there is nothing to lose and he will give himself a chance next week.
* won by fall over Dalton Combs (MCM) 1:20
* lost by decision to Austin Oyen (TV) 6 - 0
* lost by decision to Bailey Neises (HOW) 8 - 4
     * 4th place finish

112 - Colby Pierret advanced to the region tournament in Salem.  He will need to try keeping matches close next week to give himself a chance in the end.  I feel he is ready for the challenge.
* lost by fall to Cody Reed (FL) 4:18
* lost by decision to Ryan Schuman (TV) 3 - 0
     * 4th place finish

119 - Cody Bonte wrestled a smart match in the finals, but was a bit conservative.  He has all kinds of potential for next week, but needs to remember to open his style up and look to score points at all times.
* won by fall over Nathaniel Klinkhammer (HOW) 2:35
* won by decision over Jake Scofield (FL) 3 - 1
     * 1st place finish

135 - Tanner Donelan began his quest to repeat as a state champion in dominating form.  Tanner will continue to be challenged more each week.  He will be getting everyones' best effort to knock him off.  As long as he keeps his focus and his attacking style of wrestling, he will be hard to beat.
* won by fall over Dakota Petersen (FL) 0:39
* won by fall over Caleb Heiberger (TV) 5:25
     * 1st place finish

140 - Scott Howe ended his day disappointed, but needs to remember that this is a new week.  When Scott controls the tempo of matches, he is difficult to beat.  Lately, he has been out of sync and needs to get his focus back for the last two weeks of the season.
* won by major decision over James Jungwirth (HOW) 13 - 4
* lost by decision to Kyle Scofield (FL) 5 - 2
     * 2nd place finish

145 - Isaac Lukes wrestled well on Saturday and has put himself in a nice position to qualify for his first state tournament.  He needs to continue doing what he does well and stay focused on each and every match.  If he can go out and take charge on his feet, he should be able to stay alive for the state tournament.
* won by fall over John Hoiten (MCM) 1:03
* lost by major decision to Dan Noonan (HOW) 8 - 0
* won by fall over Ian Lynch (CH) 1:46
* won by fall over Ethan Haugen (FL) 4:08
     * 3rd place finish

152 - Ben Westhoff pulled a hip flexor muscle pretty severely in pratice last week.  We knew that getting 3rd place would be crucial to his chances at the region tournament.  With this in mind, he defaulted until the 3rd place match.  Ben really showed a lot of heart as you could see the pain on his face during the entire match.  His win in that match has put him in a good position to possibly qualify for the state tournament.  We hope that a week of therapy will help heal the muscle enough that he will be near 100%.  He will need all he can to get through.
* lost by injury default to Drew Eldeen (MCM)
* won by decision over Mike Jopson (FL) 7 - 2
     * 3rd place finish

160 - Zach Lukes wrestled with quite a bit of pain as well on Saturday.  He aggravated his ankle injury late in the week.  Zach has really put together some gutty performances as well over the past couple weeks.  He has a great chance to qualify for the state tournament, but also needs a week of good therapy to advance his injury as much as possible.  If he can gain some trust in his ankle, I believe he will be able to open up his style again.  That should help him next week at the region tournament.
* lost by injury default to Derek Genzlinger (HOW)
* won by fall over Aric Scott (CH) 0:52
* lost by decision to Ben Christensen (FL) 2 - 1
     * 4th place finish

171 - Brady Bonte had a nice day for himself.  He wrestled a smart finals match to set himself up nicely in the regional.  When Brady has his mind focused and believes in his ability, he wrestles as tough as anyone.  He needs to maintain his focus and confidence during the remaining part of the season.  If he can do that, he should end his season on a high note.
* won by injury default over Trevor Dietrich (FL)
* won by decision over Kyle Moe (HOW) 5 - 3
     * 1st place finish

189 - Ethan Storment wrestled much better this week.  When he wrestles with confidence, he always gives himself a chance to win.  As a senior, I would look for him to really focus in on his goals over the next two weeks.  He has a great opportunity in front of him to end his career on the state tournament podium if he keeps up what he has been doing.
* won by fall over Sheldon Johnson (FL) 5:42
* won by decision over Ben Blindert (MCM) 4 - 2
     * 1st place finish

215 - Matthew Bankes has been wrestling more aggressive lately and it has paid off for him.  Matthew will need to keep his focus and effort under control to give himself a chance to advance to the state tournament.  He needs to realize when he is in trouble and try to do damage control during his matches.  If he can keep the matches close, he has a chance in every match.
* lost by fall to Alan Kramer (HOW) 3:44
* won by fall over Jesse Simon (FL) 4:24
* lost by decision to Brandon Fedeler (CH) 5 - 3
