Blue Dragons win tournament!

Well fans, this was an incredible day for our team.  When you enter a tournament with 10 weights filled out of 14, you don't anticipate bringing home 1st place.  What happened throughout the day; however, was really enjoyable to watch as a coach.  I hope all the fans enjoyed seeing what happened as well.  I'm also proud of how the team wrestled very aggressive all day, and how they built momentum from each other.  This tournament allowed them to see that the tough practices are starting to pay off.  Our team made some great strides this week in the style of wrestling that we put on the mat.  Even though we made plenty of mistakes yet, the aggressive nature and never give up attitude made up for the mistakes.  By being so aggressive, we were able to finish the day with 13 wins by pin.  This is almost half of our 29 wins for the day.  We are really looking forward to competing in the last 6 weeks of the season.  While the Tri-Valley tournament isn't our ultimate goal, it was nice for the boys to enjoy the victory for a few days before we get focused back on the end of our season.  The win was a total effort as we placed 8 out of 10, but even our non-placers scored team points for us today.  Everyone should feel good about they day they had on Saturday.

Top 5 teams: Garretson (152.5 pts.),  Kimble-White Lake (147), Dell Rapids (137.5), Tri-Valley (132), Flandreau (126)
103 Thomas Howe competed hard for us and scored 9 valuable team points even though he did not place.  He continues to improve each week while being undersized.

* won by fall over Trevor Hallman (TV) 1:53
* won by major decision over Jacob Huewe (DR) 11 - 1
* lost by major decision to Jace Christiansen (FL) 8 - 0

119 Cody Bonte wrestled well in a balanced weight class.  6 of the top 7 wrestlers had split with each other in some way throughout the year.  An off day today would have meant trouble, but he wrestled well and gained some seed criteria for future tournaments.
* won by decision over Aaron Staum (EPJ) 7 - 0
* lost by fall to Miles Moody (MVPE) 5:06
* won by decision over Taren Xavier (DR) 6 - 1
* won by decision over Jake Scofield (FL) 2 - 0
     3rd place finish

135 Tanner Donelan was rewarded as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler for his effort.  He too had a pretty balanced weight class.  Tanner had a rematch of last week's finals and wrestled a smart, aggressive match to earn the major decision.
* won by fall over Austin Chicoine (EPJ) 1:06
* won by fall over Dakota Petersen (FL) 1:59
* won by fall over Caleb Heiberger (TV) 5:27
* won by major decision over Cady Buysse (DR) 10 - 2
     1st place finish

140 Scott Howe had a great tournament.  In the last week, he has really stayed focused during tight matches.  He has been smart in his matches and waiting patiently to score when the time is right.
* won by decision over Jackson Entringer (DR) 7 - 0
* won by decision over Slade Mutchkelnaus (MF) 8 - 1
* won by fall over Kyle Scofield (FL) 3:09
     1st place finish

145 Isaac Lukes wrestled as well as he has all year.  He continues to improve in his confidence and technique each week.  He won a very tight, hard fought match to finish 3rd.
* won by major decision over Jon Hasenbank (EPJ) 8 - 0
* lost by major decision to Cordell Muilenberg (WS/W) 13 - 2
* won by technical fall over Ethan Haugen (FL) 15 - 0
* won by decision over Ryan Urban (MVPE) 3 - 1
     3rd place finish

152 Ben Westhoff is showing signs of turning his season around.  He continues to improve each week after a tough start.  I think Ben believes he could have won both matches he lost, which is a good sign.  His hard work will continue to help him towards the end of the year.
* won by decision over Mike Jopson (FL) 8 - 7
* lost by fall to Jordan Munk (DR) 2:21
* won by fall over Lukas Forsling (EPJ) 2:40
* lost by fall to Kyle Gerlach (MVPE) 4:55
     4th place finish

160 Jess Kruid rebounded nicely after a disappointing loss in the second round.  He knew he didn't wrestle his best, yet he refocused and avenged the loss in the consolation finals match.  It was nice to see him rebound to finish 3rd.
* won by fall over Aric Scott (CCE) 1:20
* lost by decision to Ben Christiansen (FL) 6 - 2 OT
* won by fall over Nathan Thayer (KWL) 0:11
* won by fall over Stephen Almond (PAR) 0:33
* won by decision over Matt Haraldson (PIP) 7 - 1
* won by decision over Ben Christiansen (FL) 7 - 5 OT
     3rd place finish

171 Brady Bonte wrestled better than his last couple outings.  He looked more confident during his matches while returning to his physical style of wrestling.  When he is focused on his wrestling, he is tough for kids to wrestle.
* won by fall over Chad Munk (DR) 4:57
* won by major decision over Trevor Dietrich (FL) 9 - 0
* won by decision over Evan Soulek (KWL) 2 - 1
     1st place finish

189 Ethan Storment had a nice day for himself.  He continues to improve each time out.  At times, he loses his consistency with his positioning.  When he stays under control, he really wrestles well.  He will need to continue his focus during the last 6 weeks to finish out his senior year on a high note.
* won by fall over Tyler Evans (PIP) 2:37
* lost by fall to Zane Nightingale (KWL) 3:38
* won by decision over Nathan Gruis (TV) 9 - 8
* won by decision over Tyler Evans (PIP) 9 - 6
     3rd place finish

215 Matthew Bankes returned to the lineup after a shoulder injury.  He wrestled fairly well, but was a bit out of sync.  He was disappointed in his finish, but he did provide some valuable team points for us.  He should improve now that he can practice full time again.
* won by fall over Payton Jensen (PAR) 0:42
* lost by fall to Jesse Kunkel (MF) 1:25
* lost by fall to Justin DeGroot (SV) 2:15
